PEMF, or Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy, arrived on the health scene as a way for physicians to promote bone growth in patients. It’s now become a beloved tool of the wellness community since the discovery that it can do so much more.

PEMF uses electromagnetic fields to penetrate deep into the tissues of the body, igniting communication at a cellular level. This not only accelerates natural healing but also facilitates a better exchange of nutrients and waste within the cells. In addition to easing musculoskeletal pain, the benefits of regular PEMF therapy include improved circulation, reduced inflammation, detoxification, and relaxed muscles. Specific PEMF frequencies can provide calm mental focus, enhanced sleep quality, and even elevated energy levels. Now that  PEMF “mats” are widely available, safe and noninvasive therapy can become a valuable wellness tool for use in the comfort of your own home.

Most quality PEMF mats offer users a range of PEMF wavelength settings measured in Hertz (Hz) that either calm or stimulate the body in different ways, depending on the user’s current goal.

1–4 Hz (Delta): Delta waves are associated with restorative sleep and healing. They may also boost immunity, relieve stress, and ease overall body inflammation.

4–8 Hz (Theta): Theta waves are relaxing and also said to make you more resilient to stress. Because Earth’s natural magnetic frequency is between 7 and 8 Hz, this is the best choice if you are going for a higher grounding frequency.

8–12 Hz (Alpha): The Alpha frequency helps achieve mental clarity and mindfulness. It is especially effective for a morning yoga session or meditation.

12–30 Hz (Beta): Beta waves are energizing and facilitate focused concentration, alertness, analytical thinking, and problem-solving.

30Hz + (Gamma): Gamma waves are the fastest brain waves and are associated with high levels of focus and thoughts. This setting on a mat has an energizing effect and is excellent for use when you encounter afternoon slumps.

The higher the Hz, the more you’ll feel the pulsating sensation of the PEMF therapy as it moves through your cells.

Why should you consider an at-home PEMF mat?

Consider an at-home PEMF mat an investment in your holistic healthspan. Although PEMF mats can be pricey, they are an amazingly convenient way to supercharge your at-home wellness regimen. They can be found at a range of price points depending on size and added features — and can be safely used by everyone in the family (even your pets). Most PEMF biomats incorporate other types of therapies that can be used synergistically, making these mats versatile health-promoting additions to your home. In addition to the benefits provided by PEMF therapy, here are a few of the other complementary non-invasive therapies incorporated into the mats we feature in this guide.

FAR-infrared (FIR): Far infrared (FIR) is a type of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength that subtly heats the body, providing vascular dilation and, in turn, better blood flow. Commonly used in infrared saunas, FIR light is part of the light spectrum that is invisible to the human eye. Even though you won’t be able to see it, it is said to have anti-aging and therapeutic effects, including helping with detoxification, skin problems, and muscle tension.

Negative ion exposure: Negative ions are abundant in natural environments and are believed to have several positive effects on the body. They can ease stress, elevate mood, and boost the immune system. Add to the list an increase in energy levels, and some say negative ions exposure can even alleviate allergy symptoms. In PEMF mats that offer this type of therapy, the negative ions are generated by heating gemstones, which release the ions.

Light therapy: Light therapy — or phototherapy — exposes the body to a range of colors on the light spectrum, each with fast or slow wavelengths. Different colors trigger different mental and physical processes. For example, red light, commonly used within PEMF mats, is said to have positive effects on collagen production and, therefore, promotes skin regeneration. Blue light fights bacteria, which can aid in relief from acne, eczema, and other skin conditions.

Although PEMF mats are designed to be “portable,” full-size mats that have multiple layers and can be filled with gemstones can be rather heavy. If you intend to keep your mat in a designated location, this will not be an issue, but if you plan to move the mat around, you’ll want to be sure it’s not too heavy to manage on your own. A carrying case will also help you to transport it, should you need.

One last tip: Keep in mind you do not have to lay flat on a PEMF mat to reap the benefits! PEMF mats can provide benefits whether you choose to sit, stand, lay, stretch, do yoga, meditate, or work on them.
