Doctors have long prescribed compression socks to those plagued with poor circulation conditions. Lately, though, non-medical compression socks have gained steam as must-have gear among the health-focused – no prescription needed. Modern-day compression socks offer versatile benefits no matter your age or activity level. 🧦

Long travel ahead or on your feet all day for work? In both cases, compression socks can help to avoid leg fatigue and swelling from sitting or standing for long periods throughout the day. Training for that half marathon? Compression socks offer quicker recovery times between runs and may improve performance during the run. Uncomfortable, swollen feet during late-term pregnancy? Yep, compression socks can help with that, too. Compression socks are even recommended as one of the most effective ways to assist with pesky and sometimes painful varicose veins. But you don’t have to have any condition to enjoy the comfort and benefit of compression socks.

What exactly do compression socks do?

While the benefits of using compression therapy are many, the function of compression socks is similar in all cases. Graduated compression socks that go from your feet to beyond your calf start with the most robust squeeze around your ankle and gradually become looser as they approach your knee. A range of compression pushes fluids that tend to pool in the feet up the legs, offering better circulation and, therefore, less swelling. Bottom line: When worn correctly, compression socks keep the blood flowing and prevent many issues.

What compression rating should I choose?

Compression rating is essential when purchasing compression socks because different strengths are recommended for different purposes. The best compression strength for you will depend on your activity, the length of time that the socks are worn, and what you hope to address. Note that compression strength is measured in millimeters of mercury or mmHg — the higher the mmHg, the stronger the squeeze factor.

Plenty of options offer light compression starting at 15 mmHg at the ankle and working to 10 mmHg. These are best for everyday use and extended wear – commuting, sitting at your desk, on a plane, or in a car. Also, these are great for regular use if you seek relief from swelling during pregnancy. Medium-strength compression tends to fall at 15 to 20/25 mmHg, which is excellent for athletes wanting more support during training and recovery. Medium also is recommended for the relief and prevention of mild varicose veins. Firm compression approaches the medical grade level – anything above 30 mmHg. Although this is the doctor-prescribed level for conditions like edema and vein disorders, it could also be suitable for recovery after surgery or intense workouts like long-distance running. For anything in that realm, we recommend consulting a professional.

Although any non-prescription strength compression sock is generally safe for extended periods, most companies recommend getting the most benefit from wearing compression socks four to five hours a day or during training. Suppose it is your first time wearing compression socks. In that case, they can take some getting used to, and you should expect an adjustment period, especially when putting them on and off. Always take them off if they feel uncomfortable.

Comrad’s founder followed a doctor’s recommendation to try graduated compression socks to help with his swollen, tired feet at the end of the workday, resulting in some much-needed relief. But, he was discouraged by the lack of options and comfort levels of the compression socks on the market. His solution was to create almost 150 prototypes of compression socks in various fabrics, designs, and compression strengths before bringing Comrad compression socks to market. The brand offers many sizes, designs, and compression strength options, with a stand-apart option using a propriety blend called Timber Wool in the socks. This Timber Wool blend is sustainably sourced Merino wool combined with tree fibers to produce a durable sock that regulates temperature and keeps feet and legs dry and warm. It’s also naturally microbial. Other perks? Comrade compression socks have a cushioned toe and heel, and seamless toe and cuff enclosures. The dynamic stretch also allows for a more straightforward on-and-off process. The Comrad facility has been family-owned and operated for over 20 years, and 80% of all water used to dye yarns is recycled using reverse osmosis, so you can feel comfortable that you are getting a sustainably made sock.
